TASEK GELUGOR: Penang Regional Development Authority (Perda) is considering more People's Housing Projects (PPR) here in order to give a chance for Penangites to own a house.
Its chairman Datuk Shabuddin Yahaya said that Perda was in the midst of identifying strategic locations to build the houses and assured to buy the parcels of land if it received additional funding from the federal government.
"Currently Perda is focussing on developing Seberang Perai Utara district as land is available.
"We also realise that there is a significant demand from people to implement PPR projects in other districts, but it all depends on the additional funding. If we have, then we will use it for the projects," he said at a press conference today.
Shabuddin earlier handed over keys to a PPR house to 68-year-old Hasnah Jassan whose house in Permatang Buloh here was burnt on Nov 15.
The mother of six was given a 700 square feet house costing RM42,000 in Taman Desa Rakyat - a PPR project by Perda.
Hasnah expressed her gratitude for being selected as one of the recipients of a PPR house.
"We had to take shelter nearby when my house was completely destroyed. Today my prayers have been answered as I have a new home for me and my children," she said.
Perda offers PPR housing in its rent-to-own scheme with rent payment as low as RM80 to RM120 per month and the resident can claim ownership after making payments for 15 years.
