Last-minute shoppers throng Jalan TAR, Masjid India

KUALA LUMPUR: With Hari Raya Aidilifitri around the corner, consumers have taken the opportunity to do some shopping during the last weekend before the festive season.

Among popular Hari Raya shopping areas are Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman and Jalan Masjid India, where consumers can find good deals, including clothes and cookies.

One such promotion that caught the eye of visitors was a package comprising headscarves and shoes, which was sold at RM100.

At another stall, a baju Melayu and baju kurung were sold between RM80 and RM200 a pair.

The New Straits Times Press spoke to several traders, who said they were able to reduce their prices after the implementation of the zero-rated Goods and Services Tax on June 1.

Trader Ahmad Faizal Nordin said with lower prices, consumers could buy more.

“We are clearing out stock before Hari Raya by selling them at a discount.

“More people have come out to shop as this is the last weekend before Hari Raya.”

The difference in prices of goods was evident even at retail shops, such as Bata.

For instance, a pair of children’s shoes, previously priced at RM79.99, are now sold at RM75.50 each.

School Teacher Harina Mohd Maonie, 50, said consumers were more confident in spending their money shopping because of lower prices.

“The price difference is more obvious on food essentials.

“I also saved some RM100 when I bought furniture recently.”
