MACC has no power to withdraw charges

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has denied claims that it would be withdrawing its two corruption charges against Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng.

In a statement, MACC said it had no power over such matters as the withdrawal of charges for any case was under the purview of the Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC).

China Press, in quoting a source from MACC reported that the graftbuster would likely be withdrawing the charges against Lim when the former Penang chief minister's corruption trial resumes next week.

Lim is facing charges of using his position as Penang chief minister to acquire a plot of land and a bungalow under market value.

He is also charged with gaining gratification for himself and his wife, Betty Chew Gek Cheng, by approving an application for the conversion of agricultural land to a public housing zone in Balik Pulau to a company.

It was earlier reported that the case had been postponed until July 30 for mention pending a review of the charges and its withdrawal by the new attorney-general.

Lim previously remarked that the trial and the allegations made against him were politically motivated.
