Downtown Kuching hit by flash floods following heavy rain

KUCHING: An hours-long downpour which began at 4.30pm yesterday triggered flash floods in several areas of the city here, Bernama reported.

Locations which have been inundated by floodwaters include Padang Merdeka, the Sarawak General Hospital, the Saujana building at Jalan Masjid, Taman Malihah, Jalan Bentara, Kampung Sinar Budi and Jalan Batu Kawa.

A Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Operations Room spokesman said they and other government agencies are closely monitoring the situation and extending help where needed.

So far, no evacuations have been announced.

Meanwhile, in Alor Gajah, Melaka, the number of flood evacuees at the last relief centre still in operation remains at 262 people from 72 families.

According to Bernama, the weather in the district is overcast this morning.
