IPOH: The state government has yet determine whether to proceed with the proposal by a private company to build a steel coil mill and a natural gas plant near the forest reserve and turtle-landing site in Segari, Lumut.
Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu who confirmed receiving the proposal said more discussions with the related agencies and departments are still needed before any decision can be made on the matter.
“We received a proposal from a private company to develop the area but it is only a plan and the company has yet to brief the state government on the matter.
“We still need to take into account a lot of factors before making any decision. To date, the state government has yet to make any decision to develop the area.
“What is crucial now is to preserve the Segari Turtle sanctuary. Should there be plans to develop the area, we must get the views of all the related agencies and departments.” he said.
Ahmad Faizal said this after launching the STEM Waves 2019 organised by Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) in collaboration with Kampar Education Foundation at Movie Animation Park Studios (MAPS) in Meru, here today.
Also present was UTP vice-chancellor, Prof Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib.
He was responding to a recent message which has gone viral on social media that the project, which had been delayed for many years, would proceed once it has received the green light from the state government.
The message also claimed that the project would not only cut through the forest reserve in the area but also affect the turtle conservation area near Pasir Panjang, the last marine turtle-landing beach in Perak.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Faizal also assured villagers staying near the proposed project area not to worry over the matter.
