Free fresh meat for pet owners

SEREMBAN: One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

This is especially true for frozen food store owner Mohd Shuhaimi Abu who is offering excess from fresh meat cuts from his store to all pets owners for free.

Mohd Shuhaimi, 40, who has been running the store, Misa Frozen, since February this year, said the idea to donate the meat excess came about following a request by a customer.

“The customer came one day and asked whether I had minced meat for cats that she could buy. I was clueless at first because I have never sold pet food.

“She then continued to explain that other frozen food stores have been selling excess meat like that sold at our store. It got me thinking. It was better for me to give it for free rather than dispose them,” he said.

Mohd Shuhaimi said he couldn’t sell the meat excess as the texture was more delicate and had been mixed with other types of meat.

“I didn’t feel good about selling it. So I thought it would be better to donate it which would not only help ease the burden of pet lovers to provide healthy food for their pets but also avoid wastage,” he said.

He said the response from customers from all walks of life nationwide, especially pet owners, had been overwhelming, ever since the offer was posted on Misa Frozen’s Facebook page.

“We also receive requests even from Sarawak. I didn’t expect that this small contribution would receive such a huge impact.

“We don’t set any condition. It will be given on first come, first serve basis, depending on the availability of excess meat we have in store,” he said.

He added that about nine to 10 per cent of excess meat would be produced from the cutting process for each kilogramme of meat.

“When we have more meat customers, the excess will normally increase. So to be able to produce this free excess meat, we hope the volume of the customers will increase. This is our way to give back to the community,” he said.

Mohd Shuhaimi said he welcomed all customers to drop by at his store which is open daily from 9am to 9pm daily and Sundays from 9am to 5pm, to get the free excess meat for their pets.

They could also buy variety of frozen foods at a cheaper price, he added.
