Double blow for family of Jalan Syed Putra crash victims

KUALA LUMPUR: Nurul Ashikin Kamaruddin, who died in a crash at Jalan Syed Putra this morning, was pregnant with twins.

The news came as a shock to family members who gathered at Kuala Lumpur Hospital mortuary today.

Her husband, Lance Corporal Muhammad Syakiran Shamsuddin, died hours later from injuries sustained in the 8am crash.

Muhammad Syakiran's sister, Azmawati, 37, said the family only knew about Nurul Ashikin's pregnancy after the post mortem was completed at 1pm today.

"We were shocked and heartbroken when we heard about it. Furthermore, the pathologist said Nurul Ashikin was already two months into her pregnancy."

She said the couple, who has a 22-month-old son, Muhammad Arfan Ziqri, has yet to break the good new to the family.

“None of us knew about it, they have yet to inform us, probably because it was still at an early stage," she said.

Nur Azmawati said Muhammad Syakiran also has a twin brother who is currently residing in Bachok, Kelantan.

"Just a few days ago, we all gathered at Muhammad Syakiran's house. We came here for an outing because of the holidays.

"Last night, he even sent his youngest brother, Muhammad Nazrul, 17, to the bus station." she said.

Nur Azmawati said arrangements has been made to bury the couple in Repek Hilir Muslim Cemetary in Bachok.

It was reported that in the 8am crash, the motorcycle Muhammad Syakiran and Nurul Ashikin were travelling on crashed into a lorry along the stretch.

Police said the accident happened when the victim tried to change lanes during a traffic jam but failed to avoid the lorry.

Nurul Ashikin, who was riding pillion, died at the scene while Muhammad Syakiran was pronounced dead at 10.15am at the hospital.
