Learn new skills to prepare for 4IR, youth told

KUALA LUMPUR: There may be concerns regarding certain jobs being obsolete as the world moves towards the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR).

However, the younger generation should not worry too much about this and must continue to equip themselves with new skills as there will be new jobs created when technology takes over.

A delegate at the Youth Kuala Lumpur Summit 2019, Beyza Kutsav, said the younger generation need not be too concerned about the transition to 4IR.

The 23-year-old lawyer from Istanbul, Turkey, said new jobs would be created with 4IR.

“I don’t think 4IR will have a huge impact on employment. Yes, some jobs will disappear, but at the same time, new jobs will be created. The most important thing is to equip oneself with new skills to adapt to the change.

“For example, in Turkey, in preparation for 4IR, we have started to teach coding to children. We know for a fact that in the future, everything is machine-centric, and that is why we need to equip them with such skills.

“By doing so, we are preparing them to face the challenges. That is very important,” she said after attending the “Adapting to the Challenges of 4IR” workshop, which was held in conjunction with the summit at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre here.

Another delegate, Amin Qureshi, who is co-founder of Olive Japan, a Japan Muslim youth network, said many companies had not adapted to the demands of 4IR.

He said studies conducted in Japan had revealed that the country was lagging behind other countries in implementing new technology and work methodologies that could facilitate various sectors.

“Some companies in Japan are not taking the necessary or ideal measures to cope with this dynamic shift.

“What’s important is education. We need to equip the people, particularly the younger generation, with skills to secure jobs in the future.

“We are talking about jobs that may not even exist at the moment, but we could prepare the youth for such an eventuality. If they have the necessary skills, they would be better prepared to face the shift.”

He hoped Muslim countries would invest more in education and create awareness among the people.

“Perhaps the establishment of a think tank will be good, so as to advance literacy in the area.”
