Fate of Ramadan Bazaars in limbo

PUTRAJAYA: The fate of Ramadan Bazaars in the Federal Territories, due to begin operations on April 24, remains up in the air as the Covid-19 crisis intensifies.

As such, Federal Territories Minister Tan Sri Annuar Musa said he would be giving the matter “some time before making any announcement”.

Annuar said he understood traders’ concerns and would be briefed in two or three days’ time by City Hall and the Putrajaya Corporation on alternatives to the former setup of Ramadan Bazaars.

He, however, said there was a big possibility that bazaars would not be allowed to operate in its original form and capacity as they were crowded, narrow and plied by hundreds of traders.

“What is clear, Movement Control Order or not, we can’t go back to the old way which can cause health problems,” he said when met during a disinfection demonstration conducted by the Putrajaya Development Corporation here today.

The extra “time” is also expected to facilitate officers in devising a new bazaar.

He also did not discount the possibility of a name change for the bazaars which have become synonymous with Ramadan in Kuala Lumpur.
