Protect the environment, says Agong

KUALA LUMPUR: Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has called for a concerted and continuous effort in protecting the environment.

He urged Malaysia to remain committed to championing environmental and climate change issues, saying that "environmental degradation and its impact nationally and globally could no longer be overlooked".

This, he said, included intensifying efforts to conserve rivers, forests and wildlife, and reducing the intensity of greenhouse gas emissions as well as promoting the use of renewable energy.

"The strengthening of environmental legislation, enforcement activities and collaborations among all parties including regional countries need to be continuously pursued," he said in his royal address in opening the 14th Parliament today.
