Kuantan under water; major roads submerged

KUANTAN: Three days of non-stop heavy rain has left the state capital paralysed, with flooding reported in several areas here.

Traffic congestion is causing chaos on major roads in the city centre, with some stretches impassable to vehicles after floodwaters rose to about 0.5m.

Semambu assemblyman Lee Chean Chung, in a Facebook posting, said several areas are inundated, including the road in front of the Darul Makmur stadium, Bukit Setongkol, the Wisma Belia Indera Mahkota junction, Kampung Galing and several roads at housing settlements.

"Please report areas which are flooded, and I will forward the information to the Kuantan district office. Friends, please stay safe," he wrote after checking the floods along Jalan Haji Ahmad with his team.

Social media users shared images of several roads in the city, including Jalan Bukit Ubi, Jalan Lim Hoe Lek, (Darul Makmur stadium) Jalan Bukit Sekilau, Jalan Sultan Abdullah (in front of Indera Mahkota fire station) and Jalan Haji Ahmad, submerged.

Those travelling into Kuantan city centre using the Jalan Bukit Ubi flyover are advised to use an alternative route near the Jalan Bukit Ubi burial ground.

Meanwhile, the Sungai Lembing town area is inundated in 2 metre-deep floodwaters after Sungai Kuantan near Bukit Kenau burst its banks today.

The Kuantan Municipal Council, in a Facebook posting, shared videos of the flood situation in Gambang and Sungai Lembing, and provided the latest information on roads affected by the rising waters.

The situation today is similar to the floods in 2012, when water and electricity supply were cut off in most areas of Kuantan due to rising floodwaters.

Sungai Lembing – once a prosperous tin mining town – is prone to floods and is regarded as an indicator of the flood situation in the state capital during the monsoon season.

As heavy rain continues to pour, Pahang, which recorded 44 evacuees at 8am today, now has 1,064 victims from 294 families taking shelter at 39 relief centres in nine districts.
