Teen drowns after rescuing four boys from Kota Baru river

KOTA BARU: A 16-year-old ended up losing his life after helping rescue four boys who almost drowned in Sungai Perupok in Kampung Perupok Tikat, near Jalan Pantai Cahaya Bulan here, today.

The victim was identified as Wan Muhammad Azammudin Wan Aznan of the same village.

His body was discovered at the bottom of the river about an hour after the incident.

Kelantan police chief Datuk Shafien Mamat said the four boys, aged between 9 and 14, had gone to the river at about 5pm.

He said the boys were playing in the river when one of them encountered difficulties staying afloat.

"The others tried to help their friend but they too started getting pulled into the river.

"Seeing this, Azammudin, who was at the riverbank, immediately jumped in to rescue the four boys.

"Azammudin managed to save the boys but he was swept away in the process" he said.

Shafien said a search party, comprising police and firemen, with the help of villagers, later searched for the missing teenager.

The team managed to locate the teen's body at the bottom of the river at about 6.40pm.

The body was later sent to the Raja Perempuan Zainab II Hospital for a post-mortem.
