Tampoi lemang seller uses steel drums to cook delicacy

JOHOR BARU: A creative idea of a lemang seller in Taman Dahlia, Tampoi to turn used steel drums into an implement to cook lemang has caught the attention of the public.

Saadon Mohd Rais, 87, said the idea for the new technique came from his son Azman, 30, who is a contractor.

He said the drums are cleaned before they are cut into two.

"The advantage of cooking lemang in steel drums is that it cooks faster compared to the traditional method which usually takes about six to seven hours.

"This method is also easier because it does not need a flat or cement surface and only uses wood and coconut shells for fuel. The traditional method is difficult because we need to look after the fire to ensure that the lemang is not burnt.

"The new method also does not produce a lot of smoke," said Saadon.

He said he currently uses three drums to cook lemang.

"Alhamdulillah, so far we are still able to fulfill orders and there are also requests for us to continue selling after Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

"We sell the lemang between RM6 and RM10 each depending on the size. We also offer homemade rendang and serunding," said Saadon.

He said the stall operates between 10am and 8pm and they also accept advanced orders.
