LRT accident victims eligible to claim for Socso benefits

KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resources Ministry and the Social Security Organisation (Socso) are committed to assisting passengers involved in the collision between two Light Rail Transit (LRT) trains on Monday.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri M. Saravanan said the ministry and Socso are ready to assist those who are eligible for benefits under the Employees' Social Security Act 1969 and the Self-Employment Social Security Act 2017.

He said the victims who contributed to Socso and were confirmed to have suffered from occupational accidents were eligible to receive benefits under the Employment Injury Scheme.

As for those registered as self-employed and who contribute to the Socso Self Employment Social Security Scheme, Saravanan said they were eligible to apply for Socso benefits if the accident occurred while they were working, on their way to work, or going home.

Saravanan said among the benefits provided to eligible victims under the acts are medical treatment at Socso panel clinics or government clinics and hospitals through medical benefits.

"Other than that, those who were given sick leave certified by the doctor would receive Temporary Disablement Benefit for the duration of their sick leave.

"While those who suffered from permanent disability due to the accident, they would receive Permanent Disablement Benefit and Facilities for Physical Rehabilitation such as the supply of prosthetic, orthotic and orthopaedic devices such as prosthetic legs and arms, wheelchairs, crutches, and special shoes."

Saravanan said, looking at the victims' situation, they may have to undergo treatment.

"As such, we call on the victims' employers or family members to submit their claims for benefits at the nearby Socso office.

"We are committed to speeding up the processing of claims for the benefit of the victims and ensure that all assistance is channelled promptly."

On Monday, 47 people suffered serious injuries while 166 others escaped with minor injuries when two trains on the Kelana Jaya LRT line collided at about 8.45pm.
