Online learning until Aug 31, schools to reopen in stages from Sept 1

KUALA LUMPUR: Schools are set to reopen in stages for physical teaching and learning session from Sept 1 after taking into consideration the current vaccination rate in the country.

In a statement, the Education Ministry said further details on physical classes will be announced at least a week before school session starts.

"This is applicable to all public schools, government-assisted schools, private schools and academic institutions registered under the Education Ministry," it said.

The ministry said it has been collaborating with the Covid-19 Immunisation Task Force (CITF) to expedite the immunisation programme for teachers, administrators and support staff.

"As of July 16 (Friday), 61.3 per cent or 253,366 teachers and administrators as well as 10,876 (46.33 per cent) support staff have received their first dose of vaccine.

"The ministry will also continue to be informed on the Covid-19 risk evaluation by the National Security Council (NSC) and the Health Ministry if there is a need to change the dates for the physical classes, and any changes will be announced early.

"Based on the advice by the NSC and the Health Ministry on the current Covid-19 situation, home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) will continue until Aug 31," it said.

On July 4, Education Minister Datuk Dr Radzi Jidin said all school-going students in the five states namely Perlis, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang, which had transitioned into Phase Two of the National Recovery Plan (NRP), would continue with their home-based teaching and learning until the mid-term holidays.

He further said information about the operations of schools for the session starting on July 25 would be announced at least a week before that date.

At present, schools are on its mid-year break from July 16 to July 24.

On June 15, Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin announced that schools would reopen in Phase Three of the NRP, expected to take place in September and October.

To enter Phase Three, the country must meet three threshold indicators, including an average daily case log of less than 2,000, Intensive Care Unit bed usage at "sufficient" levels, and with 40 per cent of the population fully vaccinated.
