MP buys 1-tonne 'Limousin' cow for Aidiladha 'korban'

KUALA TERENGGANU: A cow from the Limousin breed weighing about one tonne might just be the biggest one in the state to be slaughtered for this year's Hari Raya Aidiladha.

'Awang Merah' who is two-years-and-six-months old has been valued at RM14,500.

It was bought by Kuala Terengganu member of parliament, Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim, and would be slaughtered on the third day of Aidiladha.

Its breeder, Muhammad Amri Azmi, 30, who hails from Kampung Merbau Patah said he was surprised when Amzad contacted him personally and told him that he wanted to buy Awang Merah.

"I was moved when Datuk Ahmad Amzad personally WhatsApp-ed me and expressed his wish to buy Awang Merah. I immediately agreed to sell it.

"I set the price at RM14,500 and Datuk Ahmad Amzad did not negotiate at all and he paid the amount right away.

"Although 'Awang Merah' is still young, it meets the age requirement for the sacrificial slaughter," he said when met at his livestock stable, here, today.

Amri, who has been in the livestock breeding business since 2017, said this is the highest price he has sold an animal for.

"I have 16 purebred cattle (lembu baka) and I plan to add more in the future. 'Awang Merah' is my favourite and I will feel its absence as it has been part of my routine to manage it everyday.

"To be honest, I am reluctant to sell it, but taking into account that it is for the purpose of 'korban' (sacrificial rites), I am willing to set aside my feelings."

He added that he also sold four cows of a freerange breed at RM5,250 each for 'korban' purposes this year.

"The sales revenue will be used to increase the total number of purebred cattle I have and to cover their monthly food expenses."

.

He said he was relieved that 'korban' rites for Aidiladha are allowed to be conducted in the state.

"We will adhere to the guidelines and standard operating procedures (SOP) set by the Terengganu Religious Affairs Department,"he said in reference to regulations amidst the Covid-19 pandemic.
