Kelantan flood victims remain at 17

KOTA BARU: The number of flood victims taking shelter at a relief centre in Rantau Panjang stands at 17 people today.

They comprise three families who were relocated to the flood relief centre at SK Tok Deh.

They were among 31 people who were evacuated to the centre last week after their homes were flooded. The remaining 14 have returned to their respective homes yesterday.

According to the state Welfare Department's flood portal, the figure was recorded as of 9.30am today.

It stated that the 17 people comprised nine adults and eight children.

Readings of water levels at major rivers in Kelantan showed that except for Golok river in Rantau Panjang, which was slightly above its normal level, the water level of all major rivers in the state including the Kelantan river was back to normal since Tuesday.

As of 10.15am today, the level at the Golok river was at 6.27m which is above 1.27m of its normal level of 5m.

MetMalaysia, in its latest statement this morning, said thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds are expected over the waters of Johor, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Sarawak, Eastern Sabah and Lahad Datu until 1pm today.

This condition may cause strong winds up to 50 kmph and rough seas with waves up to 3.5m and is dangerous to small boats.

Several states would experience thunderstorms with heavy rain and strong winds following the transition phase of the south-west monsoon.
