BUKIT MERTAJAM: The prices of vegetables are likely to see a drop within the next month or two following numerous efforts taken by the Federal Agricultural Marketing Authority (Fama).
Fama chairman Datuk Mohd Fasiah Mohd Fakeh said, while vegetable prices have seen an increase in recent months owing to several factors, including the floods, they were expected to stabilise soon.
He said Fama was working with the Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry (MAFI) on the matter.
"At Fama, we have been and will continue to take numerous measures to address the issue.
"We believe we can stabilise vegetable prices within the next few months … possibly in a month or two," he told newsmen during a visit to the Fama distribution complex here today.
The Fama distribution complex operates actively and carries out business in a commercial manner by Fama Corporation Sdn Bhd.
Mohd Fasiah said farmers affected by the floods had started replanting their vegetables.
"With that, we can expect the vegetable prices to stabilise soon," he added.
Earlier, during his visit, Mohd Fasiah said FamaCorp had planned to expand its business by venturing into more challenging businesses by optimising existing spaces within the Fama distribution complex.
Among them was the allocation of RM1.5 million, which would soon be channelled to create a chiller room to help local entrepreneurs with access to export markets as well as the setting up of Pusat Teknologi Pembungkusan Retort.
