BALIK PULAU: The idyllic Pasir Panjang beach here is facing serious damage after being repeatedly hit by strong waves.
The Consumers' Association of Penang (CAP), in a recent survey, found that the strong waves had resulted in the 300 metre banks to collapse.
Several coconut and pine trees, which line the beach, had also collapsed, with another 20 such trees waiting to fall.
To compound matters, several structures within the Kem Wawasan Negara area were nearly affected by serious erosion.
Steps, used by visitors to access the beach, have also given way, with stones and debris creating an eyesore.
CAP president Mohideen Abdul Kader said the situation had been ongoing for about a year.
"The situation is disappointing and worrying. It has been happening for a while now no action taken for an amicable solution.
"We believe that if this situation persists, it may affect the safety of the people," he said today.
As such, Mohideen urged the Penang government, the local authorities, the Drainage and Irrigation Department and the National Hydraulic Research Institute (NAHRIM) to investigate the matter and act accordingly.
"We also urge the relevant authorities to make public their findings and actions to be taken as soon as possible," he added.
