Fahmi Reza detained over monkey cartoon character

KUALA LUMPUR: Local social activist and graphic designer Fahmi Reza has been detained by police over his drawing of a monkey cartoon character in regalia akin to royal attire.

Federal police Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Abd Jalil Hassan said Fahmi was arrested by Dang Wangi police, adding that a remand order would be applied for tomorrow.

In a statement today, he said investigations were being conducted by the Classified Criminal Investigation Unit under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"Investigations are still ongoing and members of the public should not make any speculation that can disrupt the investigation.

"Police also advise people to be vigilant and sensitive on issues that touch on the royal institution, as well as religious and racial matters," he said.

Earlier in a Facebook post, Fahmi said he was summoned by police to facilitate investigations under the Sedition Act.

"I received a call from Bukit Aman, it is barely 15 hours (since the satire graphics was posted) and police have already opened an investigation paper under #Akta Hasutan and #Akta Sakit Hati over the satire monkey graphics that I uploaded last night.

"Police asked me to present myself at the police station this afternoon, see you soon PDRM!" the post said.

Yesterday, Fahmi posted a drawing of Mojo Jojo, the villain from "The Powerpuff Girls" cartoon show on social media, in regalia that resembles royal attire.
