Kedah MB: Pokok Sena Water Treatment Plant to be back in operation by tomorrow

POKOK SENA: All four Water Treatment Plants (LRAs) affected by the collapsed irrigation canal in Sungai Bukit Pinang, Pokok Sena yesterday, are expected to be back in full operation by tomorrow.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor said as of today, only Pokok Sena LRA has been completely shut down following the incident while the other three affected LRAs were still operating.

"As of this morning, only Pokok Sena LRA was completely shut down while the other LRAs namely Jenun Lama and Jenun Baru are still supplying water to Alor Star, Pendang, Gurun and Yan.

"Some 14,900 accounts are affected by the Pokok Sena LRA shut down.

"Sada (Syarikat Air Darul Aman) has provided lorry tankers and static tanks to assist the affected consumers," he told reporters at the site today.

Sanusi said work to build a temporary water barricade at the collapsed bund was expected to be completed by this afternoon, while work to reconstruct the bund structure is expected to be completed by tomorrow.

It was reported that the Terusan Tengah irrigation canal belonging to the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) collapsed yesterday, following heavy rain at the Sungai Padang Terap catchment on Sunday.

The incident caused water disruptions to 80,000 accounts under Sada after four LRAs which depended on the Terusan Tengah for water intake, were affected.

Sanusi added that once the repair is completed, the affected LRAs will be back in full operation.

"Once repair works are done, Mada will release water contained in Pelubang to refill this irrigation canal.

"Once its water level is restored at 4.9 metres, the Pokok Sena LRA will be back in operation by tomorrow," he said, adding that the repair works would cost up to RM1.8 million.
