Eight schools in Sabah closed due to floods

KOTA KINABALU: Eight schools in three districts in Sabah were closed due to floods following heavy rain since yesterday.

State Education Department director Datuk Dr Mistrine Radin today said 2,425 students and 204 teachers were affected.

The schools involved are in Beaufort - SMK St Paul, SK Lago, and SK Bukau; Tenom - SK Gumisi, SK Ladong Sapong, SJKC Yuk Syn and SK Inubai; as well as in Penampang - SK Tombovo.

Mistrine said the students will have home-based teaching and learning (PdPR) until the situation is safe for them to return to school.

"For SK Tombovo that has 985 students, the school is currently in the process of cleaning," she added.

Meanwhile, a total of 36 villages in Beaufort and 13 villages in Tenom were also affected by the floods.

The vilages in Beaufort are - Kg Batu 58, Kg Batu 60. Kg Batu 65, Kg Jempangah, Kg Binunuk, Kg Balibata, Kuarters Sesb Beaufort, Kuarters Kereta Api, Kg Melati, Kg Lumatai, Kg Kitalabak Lumatai, Simpang 4 Chan Furniture, Kg Bakalau, Kg Bingkul, Kg Luagan Sanginan, Kg Laboi, Kg Melalugus Kg Mempagar, Kg Limbawang, Kg Lajau, Kg Lubak, Kg Batandok Lubak, Kg Poring Lupak, Kg Lupak, Kg Tuhu, Kg Lupak Seberang, Kg Sungkadan, Kg Beringin, Kg Lago, Kg Suasa, Kg Kukup, Kg Jabang, Kg Pintas, Kg Mapait, Kg Labi, and Kg Gadong.

While the vilages in Tenom are - Kg.Kuala Tomani, Kg.Kalibatang Lama, Kg.Kalamatoi, Kg.Barung, Kg.Saga Laut, Kg.Lalandang, Kg.Ponontomon, Kg.Labut 1, Kg.Pantongan Saga, Kg.Tumantalik, Kg.Mandalom Lama, Kg.Pantongan Sapong, and Kg.Kanar.

Based on monitoring, several main roads of villages in lowland areas in these two districts were flooded.

Four temporary flood relief centres were set up in Tenom district, namely Kg.Mandalom, Kg.Ponontomon, Kg.Kanar, and Dewan Jinuin Jimin, while there are none in Beaufort.
