SERI ISKANDAR: Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) achieved another milestone when its Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Petroleum Geoscience programme became the first in South East Asia (SEA) and Malaysia to obtain accreditation from the Geological Society of London.
This is a significant milestone for UTP as its Petroleum Geoscience undergraduate programme is proven to be comparable to other leading universities in the United Kingdom, Ireland and other countries, such as University of Cambridge, University of Oxford, University of Aberdeen, Cardiff University, National University of Ireland and King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia.
The accreditation provides added assurance to prospective students that the petroleum geoscience degree programme offered at UTP is of the highest quality and has been approved by an independent body consisting of academics and industrialists.
A graduate taking an accredited undergraduate programme will be gaining experience and insights directly relevant to achieve the Chartered Geologist or Scientist (CGeol/CSci) status.
The only one of its kind in the region, UTP's undergraduate Petroleum Geoscience programme is ranked at Top 60 for Mineral and Mining Engineering subject by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings in 2022 and has retained its standing as the top university in the nation for this subject for the third year in a row.
The programme is packed with active learning, exciting adventures and outdoor activities, academia and industrial interactions, exposure to cutting edge technology and latest digital applications.
The teaching and learning of petroleum geoscience are based on up-to-date, comprehensive and advanced curriculum recognised and monitored by accreditation agencies, professional bodies, international examiners, academics and industrial experts.
Courses are delivered by local and international academic staff from various geoscience specialisations including geology, geophysics, geochemistry, exploration as well as production specialists.
Established in 1997, UTP offers a wide range of industry-relevant engineering, science, computing and business programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
The university has produced over 19,000 graduates from more than 60 countries.
UTP conducts extensive research activities in collaboration with Petronas and other institutions and industries, locally and abroad, on six research focus and niche areas, which are self-sustainable building, transport infrastructure, health analytics, hydrocarbon recovery, contaminant management and autonomous systems.
