UUM ranks among top 70 universities in Asia

SINTOK: Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has been ranked amongst the top 70 universities in Asia by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings (THEWUR) in 2023.

The climb of 200 places in the rankings puts UUM in second place among public and private universities in Malaysia and on par with the University of Denver in the United States, Brunel University in the United Kingdom, Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand and Murdoch University in Australia which are ranked 401-500 in the world.

UUM Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Haim Hilman Abdullah said the significant increase in the citation impact category alongside research and internationalisation compared to last year shows that all the strategies implemented through the UUM Strategic Plan were yielding encouraging results.

"The internationalisation visibility category went up from 315 to 274 as a result of the increase in the number of international students and staff as well as international activities that continue to soar.

"The university also proved that the impact of academic citations also increased from 883 to 660, thus showing that the quality of publications, teaching, and learning has reached a proud level," he said in a statement today.

Haim said UUM's position in the world rankings also increased compared to the previous edition when it was among the world's 500 best universities.

"The THE World University Rankings is a ranking of research-based universities. Therefore, the increase in this category in addition to citations shows that UUM is also on par with other research universities.

"I would like to extend my gratitude to all the staff of the university for their hard work.

"This effort is the result of the cooperation of all levels of university students who contributed energy and ideas so that we managed to achieve the best international rating so far.

"The achievement also proves that UUM being a comprehensive university with a focus on Management is not an obstacle to achieving greater success," he added.

He hoped that all parties would give full commitment and carry out their duties as best as possible in line with the Gagasan Gemilang Akademia dan Admin Holistik (GAGAH) applied by the university in order to continue to consistently drive the university's excellence at the international level.

For this latest edition, the raking lists 1,779 universities from 104 countries which is the largest listing since its launch.
