It's 'tose' lah, macha, not 'tosai'

KUALA LUMPUR: Looks like we've been spelling "tosai" wrongly in Bahasa Malaysia.

Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) says the correct spelling for the traditional Indian food made from rice flour, at least in the national language, is "tose".

DBP said this in a Twitter post, which has sparked much debate among Malaysian netizens.

Twitter user @OrangGajiDokter, in reply to DBP's post, said the spelling tose was right and adjusted according to Malay orthography.

However, many users were not in favour of the spelling as shared by DBP.

User @vivek_sarati said: "It's thosai. Do not simply change the spelling of food that belongs to other races."

User @Jinggyyi, meanwhile, was against how DBP goes about determining spellings.

"I think Dewan Bahasa sometimes forgets that language is determined by the living; the kamus (dictionary) should be updated to reflect how people use language, not the other way round."
