Southern Kedah floods worsens as nearly 240 people evacuated

KULIM: Nearly 240 people in southern Kedah have been evacuated to six flood relief centres after their homes were inundated by floods since last night.

As of 8am today, Kulim is the worst affected area with 231 people from 59 families had been relocated to five flood relief centres (PPS).

Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Kulim officer Amirul Aliff Ahmad said 93 victims from 25 families had been placed at the Surau Taman Sang Kancil PPS and another 91 victims from 21 families were relocated to Sungai Seluang Mosque PPS.

"The rest of the victims are taking shelter at the SK Sri Limau PPS (27 victims), Dewan Penghulu Paya Tok Betok PPS (six victims) and SK Permatang Tok Dik (14 victims)," he said in a statement.

Amirul added that the floods occurred following over two hours of heavy rainfall since 6pm yesterday, causing the Sungai Punti river to overflow.

Meanwhile, APM Bandar Baharu officer Abdul Rahim Khairuddin said the number of evacuees at the Surau Batu 18 PPS remained at eight.
