Command centre to help solve Internet problems in Orang Asli settlements

KOTA BARU: A command centre will be set up to look into Internet issues faced by Orang Asli communities in Kelantan and Pahang.

Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the ministry would first identify areas including Orang Asli settlements with such problems before addressing them, with the help of several telecommunication companies.

"Yesterday, I was called by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, informing me about the Internet problem faced by Orang Asli community in Kuala Boh near Cameron Highlands.

"After meeting the King, I immediately directed the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) chief operating officer Datuk Mohd Ali Hanafiah Mohd Yunus to resolve it," said Fahmi at a Press conference during his work visit to the state.

He said two other Orang Asli settlements, including Pos Bihai in Gua Musang, also faced similar issue.

"The use of satellite for Internet by the Orang Asli people there had caused heavy congestion.

"The MCMC has already taken necessary action to address this, but we hope with the setting up of the command centre, it will put the end to all this problem," he said.

During a visit to Orang Asli village in Kuala Boh, Cameron Highlands on Jan 7, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had told the Pahang state government to provide low-cost houses and Internet facilities for the Orang Asli community.
