KANGAR: The tasty servings of 'gulai ikan sembilang' or catfish curry at Warung Kopi Tandop is a must-have for visitors to Kampung Tok Kuning here while enjoying the beautiful scenery at the Sungai Perlis estuary.
Stall owner Umairah Mustaffa, 42, said Warung Kopi Tandop often becomes crowd attention during school holidays, and she had to hire four workers to help her entertain the customers, who are mostly from other states.
The mother of four, fondly known as Kak Tirah among the locals, said she started her business some four years ago after being encouraged by her late husband Sunin Pin, who was a fisherman in the village.
"I get my sembilang fish supply from my friends because I want to serve fresh fish to customers and, at the same time, help the local fishermen," she told Bernama when met at her stall located at the Kampung Tok Kuning fishermen jetty today.
Elaborating, Umairah said each serving of the fish curry is sold at around RM6.
"Apart from making curry, sembilang fish is also tasty when fried due to its sweet flavour and succulent meat," she said.
According to Umairah, she needed around 10 kilogrammes (kg) of fresh mackerels and six kg of sembilang fish every day to meet customers' demands, adding that she still maintains the original gulai recipe she inherited from her great-grandmother. - Bernama
