GEORGE TOWN: Another stray dog has been found dead, from suspected poisoning, at the same location in Island Glades here where 29 other dogs were found dead under similar circumstances since Saturday.
Dog feeder and rescuer David Yim said he received a call from a fellow feeder about the latest incident.
"Every creature has the right to live.
"The relevant authorities have to get to the bottom of this, and catch the culprits. I don't understand how anyone could be so cruel," he told the New Straits Times today.
He said several dog feeders had lodged reports with the police and state Veterinary Services Department over the matter.
Yim said the deaths of the dogs started since on Saturday.
"Every few days, there will be dogs lying dead.
"This is becoming more serious. How many more dogs have to die before we see action taken?"
Yim claimed that similar incidents were also happening in other parts of the island, such as Brown Garden in Gelugor, where about five dogs had died recently.
He said the fate of street animals was always tragic, noting that only a few were picked up by animal shelters or taken in by kind rescuers/adopters.
The Penang Island City Council vowed to take stern action against the culprit or culprits.
Yesterday, MBPP councillor and officers — Connie Tan, Quah Boon Lim and Nurhafiza Huda Idris — met the residents of Island Glades to get a clearer picture of the problem.
"As a preventive measure, the MBPP has identified several strategic locations for the installation of closed circuit cameras to monitor the movements of suspicious individuals," a spokesman said.
Choong Koon Yean, manager of International Aid for the Protection and Welfare of Animals (IAPWA) Penang, said it was offering a reward of RM5,000 to any individual with accurate information on the incidents for a legal course of action.
