Padang Terap Umno distributes 4,000 kuih sekupang to Kuala Nerang folk

PADANG TERAP: Kuala Nerang folk had a pleasant Ramadan treat when they received over 4,000 bite-sized kuih sekupang by the Padang Terap Umno division members yesterday.

Its division chief Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid said the initiative was part of a six-day Ramadan donation programme to support local food and beverage entrepreneurs whilst providing free meals to locals.

He said the programme was held from April 7 to April 9 in Kuala Nerang town followed by Naka town from April 12 to April 14.

"We collected donations from fellow Umno division committee leaders and party members for this programme.

"We will distribute food items to the locals in Padang Terap, specifically in Kuala Nerang and Naka throughout a six-day period.

"On each day, we will distribute food items prepared by six different local entrepreneurs here. I think this is a great initiative to do some charity while also helping the local small entrepreneurs.

"What we have distributed here today are packets of 10-sen kuih or locally known as 'kuih sekupang' along with some beverages," the former Padang Terap member of Parliament told reporters after handing out food packets to the Kuala Nerang folk yesterday evening.

Mahdzir, who is also the state Umno liaison committee chairman, said that the Padang Terap Umno division was also planning other charitable programmes during this holy month of Ramadan.

"Of course, we have planned to do charity and help other vulnerable groups such as orphans and single mothers by providing them donations in the form of essential items, cash handouts and many more," he added.

Meanwhile, Nor Adilah Ismail, 26, a housewife from Kampung Padang Gelangang expressed her gratitude after receiving the free meals.

"Alhamdulillah, I'm really grateful to receive this free meal, it may seem simple but it is very nice that our former MP is still active with charitable programmes for the people here," she said.

Zakwan Ahmad Salim, 34, also voiced his appreciation for how the free meal donation programme was conducted.

"Usually when there are free food giveaways like this, most of the meals are just wasted, it's not a good sight during Ramadan but it is good to see that they have taken that into consideration with this programme," he said.
