Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport worry over lack of bus drivers

KUALA LUMPUR: The Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT) is concerned about the shortage of bus drivers in the country.

Its president, Datuk Muhammad Muhiyuddin Abdullah, said there were not enough bus drivers due to public perception that the job had no potential for career growth.

"CILT has developed a programme to provide drivers with a clear career path, allowing them to be adequately trained while planning for a better future.

"We are advocating for improved working conditions and remuneration packages for bus drivers to encourage people to join the industry.

"These drivers should be given proper rest breaks and be paid well for their services," he said in a statement today.

Muhammad Muhiyuddin said that he was especially concerned about the shortage during this festive season because of the high demand for travel.

The cost of obtaining the necessary licence to become a bus driver is also another factor contributing to the shortage.

"I have called on the government to review the high cost of obtaining a bus driver's licence and provide financial assistance to those interested in pursuing a career in the bus industry," he added.

He said CILT and its partner, the Malaysian Institute of Transport were ready to work with the Transport Ministry and other stakeholders to find sustainable solutions to the issue.

"The collaboration between industry players, government agencies and academic institutions is crucial to achieving this goal," he added.
