Ex-Sarawak governor unwell, daughter pleads for prayers

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib, the youngest daughter of former Sarawak Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, has called for the public to pray for her father's health as he is currently unwell.

"Pray for his recovery," she said when approached by the media outside the Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) conference in Petaling Jaya this morning.

She said this in response to questions about Taib's current condition after being allegedly discharged from the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital last Saturday night.

Previously, Taib was reportedly taken out of the hospital against the advice of ICU staff and without consultation with family members.

However, the deputy economy minister declined to comment further on speculations regarding Taib's status, including allegations of abduction by his wife, Toh Puan Raghad Kurdi.

In a post on Instagram last night, Raghad stated that the claims were untrue and asserted that she could prove it through a handwritten note from a nurse.

According to the note shared by Raghad, at 1.40pm on Saturday, the doctor was informed that Raghad wanted to take Taib home, and a doctor noted the request.

She then urged the public to stop all assumptions and accusations directed toward her in an open letter to Sarawakians, today.

The police also confirmed that they had received a report on Taib being taken out of a private hospital, where he was being warded.

Sarawak police commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata said the investigation was based on two separate police reports, one filed by the doctor on duty last Saturday night, and another by a close family member, who claimed that medical equipment attached to Taib's body was removed without informing the hospital.

The second police report was filed by Taib's brother, Datuk Mohammad Tufail Mahmud, on Sunday, based on the first report.

Tufail claimed that he had previously been given a copy of the police report filed by the doctor at Normah Medical Specialist Centre in Kuching, where Abdul Taib was receiving intensive care.

In the report, the doctor alleged that Abdul Taib was taken out of the hospital despite being advised to stay for treatment.
