Inability of subcontractor to complete tiling work behind delay in army diving pool project

KUALA LUMPUR: The inability of the nominated subcontractor to carry out tiling works caused delays in the construction of the Combat Diving Pool at Kem Iskandar.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the Public Works Department (JKR) is currently in the process of finding a replacement contractor which will be conducted through an open tender.

He said that the department has given its assurance that the project will meet its (current) scheduled deadline.

Khaled said it was not easy to replace the subcontractor, which requires the issuance of a tender.

He was speaking at a press conference after visiting the Satu Anggota Satu Rumah housing construction site at Sungai Besi here today.

Khaled said he viewed the matter seriously and hoped that it could be resolved quickly, adding that the contractor would be subjected to penalties for any further delays.

The project has already reached 98.4 per cent completion.

Yesterday, His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, decreed for the responsible parties overseeing the combat diving pool construction at Kem Iskandar to clarify the reasons behind the delay.

Sultan Ibrahim, who is also the Special Forces Group (GGK) Colonel Commandant, is furious that the pool, which should have been fully completed by December 2022, is still under construction.
