KAJANG: A 9-year-old boy was rescued after being swept away by a strong current while trying to retrieve a ball from a drain in Jalan Kajang Perdana 8, Taman Kajang Perdana this evening.
Selangor Fire and Rescue Department assistant director of operations Ahmad Mukhlis Mokhtar said in the 6.30pm incident, the boy had climbed down into the drain before he was swept away into a 25-foot-deep underground sewer.
"A team of firemen from the Kajang Fire and Rescue Station led by operation commander Mohd Salleh Mahran rushed to the scene following a distress call and began emergency rescue efforts. Firemen safely rescued the boy from the sewer drain at 7.29pm," he said.
Ahmad Mukhlis said the victim only sustained minor injuries.
"The child was handed over to the medical emergency response team which were already waiting at the scene for further treatment," he said.
Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious and avoid hazardous areas, especially during heavy rains.
