Two men detained for smuggling livestock from Thailand

PASIR MAS: Two men were detained for the possession of 40 goats, 8 cows and 4 buffaloes believed to have been smuggled from Thailand during an operation in Bakong on Thursday.

Additionally, two lorries used to transport the animals were seized during the operation. The lorries and the livestock are said to be worth more than RM500,000.

General Operations Force Southeast Brigade commander, Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Abdul Hamid, said the seizure was made at about 3.30am.

"The GOF personnel spotted two suspicious lorries passing the area and directed the drivers to stop their vehicles.

"After inspecting the lorries, they found 40 goats, 8 cows and 4 buffaloes suspected to have been smuggled from Thailand," he said in a statement today.

He added that the initial investigation revealed that the two men, aged 28 and 30, were hired by two individuals to deliver the animals to their buyers.

He said the animals, weighing about 12,400 kg, were intended for local distribution.

On another note, Nik Ros said two men were arrested for the possession of 187 Yaba pills, 10 Epam pills, and 1.5 litres of ketum juice, valued at about RM7,000, on Thursday.

He said two mobile phones and RM210 in cash were also seized during the operation at Kampung Slow Machang.
