Asean Foreign Ministers' Retreat a boost for Langkawi tourism

LANGKAWI: Local tourism players have lauded the move to hold the Asean Foreign Ministers' Retreat (AMM) on the island here.

They said the international gathering, involving more than 200 high-level foreign delegates, also marked a proud beginning for Malaysia's aspirations as the chair of Asean 2025.

Former Kedah chapter of Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (Matta) chairman Ahmad Pishol Ishak said Langkawi's selection to host the AMM would enhance the island's global reputation.

"The Foreign Affairs Ministry, as coordinator of the retreat, will undoubtedly organise various activities for the delegates.

"Their visits to selected tourist locations will be widely shared through multiple media platforms.

"Among all forms of promotion, the most effective and beneficial publicity, and the important thing is that the local community reaps the rewards," he said.

Langkawi Tourism Community Club (KKPL) chairman Hazani Hussin said the onus was on tourism players and local residents to extend warm hospitality to the delegates converging here.

"Let the Asean foreign ministers and their delegations return to their countries with a highly positive perception of Langkawi, particularly in terms of respect and hospitality extended to guests," he said.

Meanwhile, Datuk Alexander Isaac, the chief executive officer of Tropical Charters Sdn Bhd, a luxury yacht operator, expressed confidence that the event would leave a positive impact on Langkawi's tourism.

"Various sectors, including hospitality, tourism and local entrepreneurship, will benefit from the presence of hundreds of foreign delegates and media personnel during the event on the island," he said.

"In addition to attending meetings, they will undoubtedly have the opportunity to explore the island, appreciate its natural beauty and savour the delicious local cuisine," he said.

Besides AMM on Saturday and Sunday, Langkawi is also hosting two other major Asean meetings, namely the Asean Financial Track Meeting (yesterday and today), and the Special Asean Senior Officials Meeting on Energy (Jan 21 to 23).

Previously, the Foreign Affairs Ministry announced plans for approximately 300 meetings at the official and ministerial levels, including two summits involving heads of state, as part of Malaysia's Asean Chairmanship this year.
