All flood evacuation centres in Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru closed

JOHOR BARU: Johor's flood situation has improved significantly, as all temporary evacuation centres in Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru were shut down this afternoon.

State Disaster Management Committee chairman Tan Sri Dr Azmi Rohani said Kluang and Pontian remained affected by the floods, with 230 victims from 72 families housed in three centres.

"The centres at Balairaya Kampung Perpat, Kota Tinggi, were closed after 28 victims were allowed to return home."

Similarly, the centre at SK Nam Heng here was shut down after 53 victims from 16 families returned home, Azmi said.

Azmi, who is the state secretary, said Kluang was the worst-hit district, with 213 victims from 68 families sheltering in two centres, while Pontian had 17 victims from a single family housed in SK Kampung Melayu Paya.

The Meteorological Department had not issued any thunderstorm warning for Johor but had placed Kluang, Mersing, Pontian, Kulai, Kota Tinggi and Johor Baru under a continuous rain watch, expected between Friday and Sunday.

No rivers in Johor are at a dangerous level. However, Sungai Kahang, a tributary of Sungai Endau in Kluang, has reached the warning level.

As of 4pm today, rain was reported in Kota Tinggi, while the weather in Muar, Pontian, Segamat, and Batu Pahat was cloudy.

Other districts experienced clear weather.
