[UPDATED] Malaysia to expedite repatriation plans amid Gaza ceasefire

GEORGE TOWN: Malaysia is accelerating efforts to repatriate Palestinian nationals who came to the country for medical treatment as the Gaza ceasefire begins today.

Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the Foreign and Defence Ministries were coordinating the process to expedite their return.

The Palestinian nationals are currently housed at Wisma Transit Kuala Lumpur (WTKL), and all are reportedly in good health.

"I raised this matter during last week's cabinet meeting, and we agreed this ceasefire period presents the best opportunity to facilitate their return," he said at the closing of a two-day Rural and Regional Development Ministry retreat here today.

Israel's cabinet recently approved a Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal, which took effect today, halting fighting in what has been Gaza's deadliest war.

Zahid expressed hopes that the repatriation process could be completed within the 42-day ceasefire period.

He said coordination with the Egyptian government was underway to ensure safe passage for those returning through Gaza.

"The Foreign and Defence Ministries will provide further details as arrangements progress. Our priority is to ensure the process is swift and smooth," he added.

Earlier this month, several Palestinian protested at WTKL over their request to return home.

The matter was resolved peacefully.

"We accepted the apology from Palestinian Ambassador to Malaysia Walid Abu Ali for the disturbance.

"We understand the frustration of those waiting to return home, but with the ceasefire in place, this is the right time to make it happen," Zahid said.
