Tourist dies after being struck by tree branch

SANDAKAN: A tourist was killed after being struck by a falling tree branch in an incident at the Rainforest Discovery Centre (RDC) here this afternoon.

In the 2.45pm incident, the 74-year-old victim and four of his family members were leaving the RDC after completing their visit to the tourist site.

However, a large tree branch fell and struck the victim on the head.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek said the victim, who sustained head injuries, was rushed to the Emergency Unit of Duchess of Kent hospital (HDOK) for treatment.

"However, the victim was pronounced dead at 4.28pm.

"The victim's body is currently at the HDOK Forensic Unit, and a post-mortem is scheduled for 2pm tomorrow.

"The case has been classified as a sudden death, and investigations are ongoing," he added.
