Ipoh Central Market set for major RM15mil revamp to rival KL's Pasar Seni

IPOH: The Ipoh Central Market is set to undergo a major upgrade, with plans to transform it into a landmark resembling the iconic Kuala Lumpur Central Market (Pasar Seni).

Housing and Local Government Minister Nga Kor Ming said that RM15 million had been allocated for the project, which is expected to begin soon.

"This upgrade will restore the Ipoh Central Market's nostalgic charm and former glory, as it was once a key shopping destination for locals.

"It has a unique appeal, especially with its strategic location in the heart of the city. With the expertise of our mayor, Datuk Rumaizi Baharin, we hope to turn it into a landmark similar to Kuala Lumpur's Central Market," he said.

Nga told reporters this after visiting the reconstruction sites of the Pasir Pinji Market and Canning Wet Market here today.

On the Pasir Pinji Market, he said that RM16 million had been approved for a complete makeover.

The over-50-year-old market will feature 214 trading units, 84 parking spaces (including for persons with disabilities), and facilities aimed at achieving Gold Status under the Green Building Index.

The project is expected to be completed by Nov 18, 2026.

The reconstruction includes demolishing the old market structure and creating 214 trading units, 84 parking spaces (including facilities for persons with disabilities), 39 motorcycle parking bays, and three parking spaces for lorries.

As for the Canning Market, RM500,000 was allocated for upgrading works, which were successfully completed within 12 weeks by the appointed contractor.

When asked whether the ministry would work with the Tourism, Arts, and Culture Ministry to list markets as must-visit attractions for Visit Malaysia Year 2026, Nga confirmed the plan to promote markets nationwide as tourism products.

"Malaysia has many public markets over 50 years old, with unique and attractive features that can be highlighted as tourism products.

"In addition to stimulating the local economy, this initiative can also contribute to our tourism industry, which has now become the second-largest income source for our country," he said.

He cited examples like Bukit Mertajam Market Complex and Pasir Pinji Market as perfect candidates for such promotion.

He also urged all 156 local authorities nationwide to submit applications for market upgrading projects within their jurisdictions.
