KUCHING: The number of flood victims in Sarawak has risen to 5,002 this morning.
Those displaced from the floods are from 1,406 families currently housed in 43 temporary relief centres (PPS).
A spokesperson for the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN) said that of the 43 PPS, two are sheltering 71 victims of a longhouse fire in Kanowit and 105 victims from 25 families affected by a landslide in Miri.
Of the 41 other PPS across the state, Serian has the highest number with 15 centres, followed by Bintulu and Miri with seven each, Kuching and Samarahan with five each, and Sibu with three.
According to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), heavy rainfall is expected to continue throughout the state today.
Eight divisions—Kuching, Serian, Samarahan, Sarikei (Meradong), Sibu (Sibu and Selangau), Mukah, Bintulu (Tatau and Bintulu), and Miri (Subis)—are now under the red alert category, indicating a severe weather warning with continuous heavy rain expected.
Six other divisions—Sri Aman, Betong, Sarikei (Pakan, Sarikei, and Julau), Sibu (Kanowit), Kapit (Song and Kapit), Bintulu (Sebauh), and Miri (Beluru, Miri, and Marudi)—are under the orange alert category, signaling continuous heavy rain in these areas.
