Bintulu floods: 4 swept away by floodwaters after boat overturns

BINTULU: Four people were swept away by floodwaters after their boat overturned in Taman Bukit Orang yesterday.

A video of the incident has since gone viral.

Fortunately, all four, in their 40s, were rescued by firemen.

Samalaju Fire and Rescue Department chief Irwin Abidin said they received a distress call at 1.58pm.

He said a team assisting with flood relief nearby was diverted to rescue the victims, who were foreign workers.

"Our firemen acted quickly to rescue them before the situation worsened."

All four have been taken to a temporary relief centre (PPS).

Meanwhile, the Sarawak Civil Defence Force said 5,561 people in the state have been evacuated to 47 PPS.
