Raja Perempuan of Kelantan launches An-Nisa fish farm in Melor

KOTA BARU: The Raja Perempuan of Kelantan Tengku Anis Tengku Abdul Hamid today officially launched the An-Nisa Fish Farm at Masjid D'Raja Tengku Aziza, in Melor, here.

During the ceremony, Tengku Anis released 1,000 tilapia fry, each measuring three to four inches, into the pond.

Meanwhile, Agrobank chief executive officer Datuk Tengku Ahmad Badli Shah Raja Hussin said the An-Nisa Fish Farm is a pilot project, launched by Agrobank, to empower urban agriculture through Biofloc Technology, an aquaculture system which uses microbial biotech for fish farming.

He said that, so far, Agrobank has allocated RM80,000 for the project, to expand it to four more mosques in the state, specifically in the districts of Kota Baru, Tumpat, Pasir Mas, and Machang, before the possibility of extending it to mosques nationwide.

"Four other mosques have not been decided yet, and it will be discussed with the Kelantan Islamic Religious and Malay Customs Council (MAIK).

"Each mosque will receive up to RM15,000 to implement this fish farming," he said, after the launch today.

Ahmad Badli Shah said that Biofloc Technology is an innovation to transform the aquaculture industry, by reducing water exchange where domestic waste is processed, into useful products.

"This project provides opportunities for mosques to generate income through urban agriculture activities, particularly fish farming.

"In three to four months, mosques can harvest up to 500kg of fish," he said.

He said this effort could indirectly generate income for the mosque, while fostering ties among congregants and the local community.
