Sabah CNY open house brings cultures together in festive cheer

KOTA KINABALU: The state Chinese New Year open house saw guests and visitors from 30 ethnic groups arriving in traditional attire, reflecting Sabah's diversity.

The event was hosted by the state Sabah Tourism, Culture, and Environment Ministry, said permanent secretary Datuk Josie Lai.

"There were about 30 ethnic groups among the guests, each wearing their traditional attire.

"We are also happy to see many visitors celebrating together by wearing Chinese outfits such as cheongsam and red-coloured clothing."

She said this after the event at the Sabah International Convention Centre had concluded.

About 25,000 people attended the event, held from 11am to 2pm, she added.

Visitors enjoyed dishes prepared by 15 hotels.

Present were Yang Dipertua Negeri Sabah Tun Musa Aman and his wife, Toh Puan Faridah Tussin.

Also in attendance were Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor and his wife, Datin Seri Juliah Salag, along with the event's organising chairman, state Tourism, Culture, and Environment Minister Datuk Seri Christina Liew, and other state ministers

Guests were entertained by a lion dance before the event started with a yee sang tossing ceremony

Musa later presented contributions to senior citizens.
