Sarawak floods gradually improving

KOTA SAMARAHAN: The flood situation in Sarawak is gradually improving, according to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

He said as of last night, 12 temporary evacuation centres (PPS) had been closed.

The remaining 63 PPS are still operational, sheltering a total of 12,306 victims from flood 3,687 families across Sarawak.

"The flood situation is improving, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), whose teams, despite the rain and heat, successfully rescued the victims.

"Fortunately, most of the victims were cooperative in relocating," said Uggah after visiting PPS in Kampung Sampun Tebun, Asajaya.

Uggah, who also chairs the SDMC, said that the committee would remain on high alert in the event of any high tide, following the National Security Council's Directive No. 1.

"All agencies must be ready and prepared to face any eventuality. This includes ensuring that equipment, manpower, and food supplies are in place. We hope there will be no further floods, but we remain vigilant in case of any developments.

"In Sarawak, we are fortunate to have free radio service even in remote areas like Long Busang, where NGOs act as our liaisons. If anything happens, they'll immediately contact the secretariat," he said.

Regarding the RM1,000 aid for flood victims, Uggah emphasised that those who have yet to evacuate to a PPS must report to the Resident Office so that their situation can be assessed, allowing them to receive the aid. — BERNAMA
