Chinese tailor's baju kurung business thrives in Kelantan's Kampung Cina

KOTA BARU: Malay women in Kampung Cina have been flocking to local tailor Saw Ley Hoon for their baju kurung for years, drawn to her skill and dedication.

At 64, Saw is now one of the most sought-after baju kurung tailors in Kota Baru, particularly in her hometown of Kampung Cina.

Her journey into tailoring began when she was just 18, learning the craft from a Malay neighbour after completing her Form Six studies.

"I became interested in sewing after seeing my neighbour receive so many orders for baju kurung during Hari Raya," Saw explained.

"That's when I decided to learn from her."

Saw made the decision to focus fully on tailoring 15 years ago, leaving behind her previous business selling women's accessories.

In 2010, she made the shift to sewing full-time.

As the Hari Raya festive season approaches, Saw has already received nearly 100 orders from local customers.

"I started taking orders in January, and by the end of this month, I plan to stop accepting new ones to ensure I finish everything at least two weeks before Hari Raya," she said.

Despite the rising cost of living, Saw has no plans to raise her prices.

"I usually charge between RM50 and RM70 for each baju kurung, depending on the design's intricacy," she added.
