Johor Pas announces contest in 17 parliamentary, 40 state seats

JOHOR BARU: Johor Pas will contest in 17 parliamentary and 40 state seats in the 14th General Election (GE14), said its state party commissioner Abdullah Hussin.

He said the number of seats was the most Pas has ever contested in the state so far.

He said the party will defend the four state seats of Sungai Abong, Maharani, Puteri Wangsa as well as Parit Yaani, the last seat of which is held by Parti Amanah Negara (PAN).

"Even if Pas is alone this time around, it does not mean we will contest in all of the parliamentary and state seats in Johor because we have our own considerations to make.

"In terms of candidates, we will field both younger and veteran candidates comprising of ulama, professionals and community activists," he said today.

He said this in a press conference after a handing over of duties ceremony at the state party headquarters.

Also present were deputy state Pas commissioner Roslan Nikmat and Pas assistant secretary-general Khairul Faizi Ahmad Kamil.

Abdullah said he was confident that the party will defend the seats it won the last time around and that it wanted to add more victories for GE14 to have at least eight seats in Johor.

"We will abide by all the planning outlined by the party's central committee. But it is just that when we are going it alone, the approach in Johor will be to double our efforts to win over the people," he said referring to the party's stand of not having any ties with the current opposition pact, Pakatan Harapan.

In the last general election, the Johor Pas, which had been part of the previous opposition pact had contested in eight parliamentary seats and 31 state seats in Johor.
