Shamsul Anuar: Letter of pledge backing Zahid as PM is fake

IPOH: Barisan Nasional (BN) communications director Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah said the letter of pledge backing Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as prime minister that he allegedly signed is fake.

He said there is no such letter.

"This is clearly a malicious effort by irresponsible parties. It is obviously a plan to discredit Umno and BN ahead of GE15 (15th General Election)," he said in a post on his Facebook page on Wednesday.

In the letter of pledge, which has gone viral, Shamsul Anuar allegedly promised to back Zahid as prime minister and to urge the new government to drop court cases involving Umno and BN leaders.

In Johor, Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the only pledge that party members have to take is to promise to be loyal to the party.

He said this was aimed at strengthening Umno and preventing BN candidates who win seats in GE15 from switching parties.

He said the pledge was a normal practice in every election and must be signed by all election candidates.

"I want to make it clear that all candidates who contested in the Sabah, Melaka and Johor state elections signed the pledge.

"Candidates for this general election signed it, too. It's not a problem because it is meant to strengthen the party.

"There is nothing about that (backing Zahid as PM and dropping court cases involving party leaders) in the pledge. It is only a pledge of loyalty to the party," he said after the launch of the Johor BN election machinery at the Educity Indoor Stadium in Iskandar Puteri.
