BERA: Caretaker Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said affordable, quality homes will be his priority if he is given the mandate to lead the country again.
He said RM815 million had been allocated for housing programmes, especially for the lower income group, in the budget which was tabled recently.
"The government realises that the people deserve to own homes and we will strive to make this happen.
"This is not only in line with our 2030 Sustainable Development Goals agenda but also goes with the 'Keluarga Malaysia' goal in ensuring that no one gets left behind as the country develops," he said at the groundbreaking of the People's Housing Programme (PPR) at the 34th Royal Artillery Regiment camp here.
Ismail Sabri said the government remained focused on the PPR programme.
The development of the PPR project is in line with the government's agenda of building 500,000 affordable units under the 12th Malaysia Plan, he said.
Up till Aug 31, a total of 156 PPR projects encompassing 100,000 units have been developed nationwide.
The federal government has allocated RM234 million to develop the Bera PPR Project on 36.42ha of land next to the camp.
It covers 1,000 single-storey terrace houses, including 10 units for the disabled.
The 750 sq ft units come with three bedrooms and two bathrooms while the neighbourhood is complete with amenities such as a mosque, kindergarten, childcare centre, multi-purpose hall and shops.
Caretaker Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican said those with a monthly income of RM5,000 and below were eligible for the homes.
He said the Bera PPR project had become a reality thanks to the cooperation between the federal and state governments.
Pahang, he said, had the highest number of PPR projects in Peninsular Malaysia with 31 projects contributing more than 4,000 units.
To date, three PPR projects are being constructed in Tahan Jerantut, Lanchang and Beserah Sungai Karang, Kuantan.
