GE15: PH wins Sungai Buloh parliamentary seat

SUNGAI BULOH: Pakatan Harapan's Datuk R. Ramanan won the Sungai Buloh parliamentary seat against Barisan Nasional's hopeful Khairy Jamaluddin, by 2,693 majority.

The constituency saw a seven-cornered fight, which ended with Ramanan from Pakatan Harapan winning with 50,943 votes.

Election Commission's returning officer, Mohd Jusni Hashim officially announced Ramanan as the winner at 2am, after all tabulation ended at Petaling District and Land Office Complex, here.

Khairy obtained 48,250 votes compared to the PH's new face and first timer.

Perikatan Nasional's Mohd Ghazali Md Hamin received 29, 060 votes, in third place.

The race for the seat was among Khairy, Ramanan, Mohd Ghazali Md Hamin from Perikatan Nasional, Akmal Yusoff from Pejuang and Ahmad Jufliz Faiza from Party Rakyat Malaysia (PRM).

Two independent candidates, Syed Razak Aslagoff and Nurhaslinda Basri also contested for the Parliament seat but lost their deposits, after failing to meet the EC's minimum requirement.

Sungai Buloh, a sub-urban constituency, has about 158,090 registered voters and was considered one of the hotseat in Selangor.

There are 124,881 registered voters aged between 21 and 59 (78.99 per cent) in the constituency, followed by 17,967 or 11.36 per cent senior citizens aged 60 and above, and the rest 15,242 voters (9.65 percent) comprised youths aged 18 to 20.

Previously, PH's R. Sivarasa held Sungai Buloh for two terms and in the last election, he won with a 26,000 grand majority.

Khairy or better known as KJ meanwhile had contested here after leaving the Rembau constituency, which he held for three terms.

Earlier, the caretaker Health Minister was caught in brickbats with his Umno party president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, after vice president Datuk Seri Mohamed Hasan requested to contest in Rembau, instead.

Although initially Khairy seemed to contemplate, he gave up his stronghold, Rembau to Mohamed and agreed to contest in Sungai Buloh.

He too became the center of attention among Malaysians after declaring his intention to become the country's future Prime Minister.

He openly declared this during his election campaign trail in Sungai Buloh and this however did not sit well with his party leadership, especially Zahid.

KJ has been regarded as a highly potential new generation leader, who wanted to transform Umno in order to make the party more palatable to the Malay population.

His defeat today was likened to be a speed breaker to his political career, after Barisan Nasional loss significantly in the GE 15.
